Cumberland House Reserve School - 1981

page two

This page is intended for the students there today, in your modern new school. Our school then had two classrooms, with students in grades one to nine. As you might guess though, it wasn't all work and no play...

We had no gym like you do today, but we had mats ...
Handstands aren't all that hard to do ...
See those girls in the lineup ... Wonder if they can still do a handspring  :=)
They might if they had the same reliable spotter as in the third photo  ...

Here we are lined up awaiting our turn ...
"Our those really our mothers doing headstands", I hear someone saying ...
"Yep, and I'll bet they can still do it now,
twenty-six years later ... "
"How come I ended up on my seat?"

Nothing to it ... See how easy it is with a good spotter ...
(But be sure and try to track down the same spotter, if possible ...)

The white upright being studied so closely was part of our homemade bench for barbell workouts. It seemed to work okay ...

Training hard for the 1981 "Ms Cumberland House Cree Nation Reserve" competition ... Which lifter would you vote for? Maybe we could have a replay in 2008 ...
(Just kidding, we didn't really have that contest ... )

Wow! This bench press looks like serious power lifting ...

"Flit like a butterfly, sting like a bee"- (Mohammed Ali)
Good thing we used big soft 16-ounce gloves, or my goodness, we might have witnessed a "Million Dollar Baby" tragedy like in the film that came along twenty years after our women warriors had hung up their gloves!!!!

Note: The photos will all print out at roughly the size of the large ones on these pages. If you want larger copies, e-mail me at lmattson928@hotmail.com and I might take it on as a winter project.

These  two pages contain about half the photos on hand. Most of the rest can be posted after I've put up a page for Red Earth, where
, thanks to H.H., I got the encouragement to do online pages of recent school history.
